This was beautifully put! As someone who has recently been trying to break into the design field professionally, I have seen countless people/job postings/LinkedIn posts using the word design as an umbrella term for so many different things - a lot of which are synonymous with art rather than design.

For someone new such as myself, reading these posts would give me a bit of anxiety regarding my skillset on whether I should focus on my visual, technical or problem-solving work. This post gives me a lot more reassurance in the direction that I'm going in. Having a niche skillset is key!

Awesome stuff. I really do think so much of the talk of the industry is in UX vs visual design (for better or worse, due to the education pipeline for these jobs) -- which completely misses the point of what we try to achieve as practitioners altogether.

If more designers look at their work in terms of impact, market type, and TAM, we'd have much more clearer proof of value out there, which raises the credibility of design as a whole. I think you're writing some of the most boundary-pushing stuff on our practice in general. This is stuff I've always tried to advocate for but there were never enough voices in the room to 'get it'. Keep it up man!
